Have you heard about the CPSIA law?

I thought I’d post about this here because it seems so many people haven’t heard about it.  They are passing the first part of it on Feb. 10th.    I’m hoping and praying it doesn’t get passed without ALOT of revisions.    Stuff like this just makes me mad to be honest.

So.. what is this law?   It is to regulate our childrens toys so they don’t have lead in them.  Sounds good right?  Who wants lead in their toys?

Well, as it stands right now..  if this law doesn’t change..

THIS.. will be illegal to sell..

(buy here..  http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=sr_gallery_16&listing_id=11830693 )

This will be illegal to sell..

(buy from nanas bottoms)

.. ring slings, burp cloths, blankets..  you name it.. if you don’t get it tested for lead.. it’s illegal to sell it.     Get it tested.. not a huge deal right?   Well that diaper right there contains velcro, thread, and probably at least 3 diff. types of fabric.   To sell that diaper you would have to get EACH item tested for lead.    It doesn’t count it the fabric supplier had it tested.. you will eventually (not on feb 10th.. this is a bit farther down the line) have to get it tested yourself.   I’ve heard these tests will range from $70 and up.   How in the WORLD will a small time biz. afford to do that?   The answer.. they can’t.     That diaper that our dear Denise sells..  it would cost her at least $400 to test it for lead… $350 per component for phthalates testing and you’ve got a total of about $2150 invested in testing..  just to be able to sell it.

Here’s a fun link for you guys.  http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=19132270

I buy SO many of my items from moms that work out of their homes handmaking things.  I love handmade things and it’s a great way for me to help a mom stay at home.   With this new law thousands of families are out of buisness.    I buy baby carriers, all the kids diapers, many of their clothes, blankets, etc.. you name it.. I’ve bought it handmade.

Anyone you know make and sell baby clothes, or ANYTHING intended for a child under the age of 12?  With this new law.. they are out of biz.

Want to know what makes it even MORE fun?    This law as of right now doesn’t even exclude BOOKS!!!!!   many of my homeschool items come from small time publishers who I like because they are CHEAP.    In order to afford this new nonsense the prices will skyrocket.     Not to mention libraries and places like Goldens could be in trouble for selling books that haven’t been tested.

Even MORE fun..    as it stands right now..   resale shops aren’t even totally safe.

It’s not just homemade stuff guys.. it’s ANYTHING made for kids under age 12.    The big companies can afford it.. but as a result our prices for anything made for kids will go up.  The little guys.. including the thousands who do this type of thing for their families sole income are just out of luck.. Not to mention   I might not be able to buy anything handmade for my kids.    I know at least 20 (not personally.. but online friends)   who, if this law passes will be put out of biz.. this is their families sole income.

This is actually one of the issues that change.org is bringing up before Obama (it got voted as one of the top 10 issues out of MANY) so lets hope something gets changed guys!

I seen this on the news, I was shocked when they said if the law passed no one could sell childrens clothes on ebay unless they had been tested. It really is outrageous. Hoping they don’t pass the law.

I have not heard of this law and this is outrageous. Where do people come up with this type of stuff?
I’m sure people with common sense will know this law shouldn’t be passed.
Just my opinion. Keep me alert to whats going on.

When I first heard about this I was disgusted. I thought about blogging about it, but was so angry I couldn’t form a complete sentence. I should just make a link to your blog on mine.

It’s just as bad here in the UK – so much time is wasted trying to keep track of all the rules and regulations, especially waste management. There’s barely enough time left to actually try and make a living.
