3 minute no sew fleece hat tutorial

So, I’ve been making the kids a ton of fleece hats lately because they are SO easy.   I was having trouble finding fleece prints though (small prints that are the right scale for a hat.. most are huge scale.. more like for a blanket)   So, I came across the cheap fleece women’s pajama pants at walmart and had an idea.     This would be a really good deal if you go the day after christmas when all of their holiday pj’s will be on sale.  They aren’t all Christmasey either.

So, I bought these pj pants for $7.00   Either get a size where the leg will fit your kids head, or simply run a quick seam down the side to make it smaller.

You’ll need the pajama pants, some ribbon, and some scissors.

measure from where you want the hat to sit on your kids head (above eyebrows, below ears, wherever) to the top of their head.  Then add about 2 inches onto that measurement for the fringe.

Then, cut that amount of inches off the bottom of the pant leg.   What makes this even easier than normal is that you can use the pants hem for the hem on your hat!

Now, on the raw edge (w/o the hem) cut a fringe of about 2-3 inches tall around the top.

Next, take your ribbon and tie it right below the fringe line.  Be sure to smooth the gathers with your hands before you tie it tight or it will be all messy looking.

Tie it as tight as you can get it and either cut the edges of the ribbon, leave it lose, or tie a bow.

And voila.. you have a hat!   Since there are 2 pant legs you can make 2 hats just like this.  I made one for Brianna and Lorien both.  And if you sew you have enough fabric left for 4 other hats.   If you have just one kiddo you could make a no sew scarf out of the other pant leg very easily.     I got these pajama pants for $6.00 so it’ll work out about $1.00 per hat.

And, I’ve also followed this easy tutorial http://www.mountainmomreport.com/2009/11/fleece-hat-tutorial.html to make the girls each one of these..

Super cute! They look so cozy, too! I could use one about now as I’m shivering in my robe! :)
